October 2011

Dear Member of Congress,

As you begin to debate ways to decrease our national debt and find solutions to deficit spending, we request that you support a strong Balance Budget Amendment when it comes up for a vote.  With a $14.8 trillion dollar debt and annual budget deficits of more than one trillion dollars, Congress has shown that it cannot be trusted with America’s pocket book and you must limit future Congresses’ ability to overspend.

We urge you to support a balance budget amendment similar in structure to H.J. Res. 1, the versions that Reps. Goodlatte (R-VA) and Walsh (R-IL), introduced, and has the support of 47 Republican Senators.  This amendment would require Congress to balance the federal budget every year.  Furthermore, this amendment would limit spending to 18 percent of GDP and require two-thirds majority vote in both chambers to raise taxes and three-fifths vote to raise the debt ceiling.  This amendment has the critical protections that will prevent tax hikes and reckless spending that have been pervasive in Washington, D.C.

Our Generation is a non-partisan, nonprofit grassroots citizens group, dedicated to improving the lives of senior citizens through awareness and advocacy.  I hope you find the above information useful and consider our viewpoints as you continue to serve in the U.S. Congress.

Sincerely,
