RE: Council For Retirement Security, a program of Our Generation
Dear Member of Congress,
As you begin to work on spending priorities for the fiscal year (FY) 2012 federal budget, Our Generation wants to make you aware of some issues that are of concern to America’s seniors. According to a March 2011 NBC/WSJ poll, 8 in 10 Americans are concerned with the state of our budget and deficit and find some budget cuts acceptable. However, 60 percent say they are adamantly opposed to cuts in entitlement programs including Social Security.
Congress would be prudent to first tackle duplicative, wasteful and inefficient government spending before they put America’s seniors at risk by changing the current benefit structure. Congress could save money and improve the budget situation by cutting programs like the $175 million that the Department of Veterans Affairs spends on maintenance for unused buildings.
We at the Council for Retirement Security, a program of Our Generation, a non-partisan, nonprofit grassroots citizens group, are dedicated to improving the lives of senior citizens through awareness and advocacy. I hope you find the above information useful and consider our viewpoints as you shape our nation’s spending priorities and other matters of vital importance to America’s expanding senior population.
